Symptoms of AMD

AMD can progress slowly or rapidly, but the deterioration of central vision generally occurs over a period of a few years. Peripheral vision (the outside of your visual field) usually remains normal, but you may have difficulty seeing at a distance or doing detailed work like sewing or reading fine print.

Faces may begin to blur, and it becomes harder to distinguish colors. Distortion that can cause edges or lines to appear wavy may occur at the same time or before blurred vision is noticed.

People with dry AMD in only one eye often do not notice any change in their vision. With one eye seeing clearly, they are still able to drive, read or see details. Vision loss may not be noticed unless AMD affects both their eyes.

Those with more advanced forms of AMD may begin to see dark or empty spaces that block the center of vision.
